Intercollegiate Athletics Recruiting Process

College coaches like to collect prospect referrals from professional scouts, high school coaches, recruiting services and coaching friends.  College coaches like to identify prospects early, usually a couple of years ahead of time.

Early identification usually happens for a prospect after their first successful year of high school varsity participation.  Early identification during sophomore year is ideal.  The sooner they know about you, the sooner they can evaluate you to maximize your scholarship opportunities!

Coaches evaluate the prospects talent level through video, scout evaluations, game evaluations, camps (NCAA Legal Tryouts) and tryouts.

90% of first evaluations are now done through VIDEO!  College coaches can to quickly make an initial evaluation through a highlight/skills video.  If interested, they may request game video.  College coaches will sometimes request DSV access through high school head coach.  DSV will give college coaches access to all your game video.  You can also take blank DVD’s to your coach to burn your game videos.  High school coaches have limited time, so if you are interested in making a highlight video, do it yourself or pay someone to do it.  It may take months to get some high school coaches to create and edit a highlight video.  Simply ask to have your games burned to a DVD and then you can control the highlight editing process.

The college coach evaluates and selects the talent.
  • Some sports have Jr. Day or Sr. Mini-Camps (1 Day Only)
  • Not invited to Jr. Day???   Make your own Jr. Day.  Go visit!!!
  • The best verbal scholarship offers are made during the Spring of the Junior year!
  • If you don’t have a scholarship offer by this time, then college coaches don’t know about you or don’t think you can play at their level.
  • Sr. Mini-Camps – Do they know who you are beforehand?  If not, then always be first in line for drills.  The coach will notice you!

Coaches are highly interested in the student-athletes that they call each week and send mail to them.  Coaches may offer a verbal scholarship, invited walk-on or redshirt opportunity.  Coaches have a list of several prospects they recruit for the same position.  Coaches usually make the same offer to other student-athletes in case their first choice does not accept.

Coaches send out a Letter of Intent and/or Scholarship offer for the Early Signing Dates or Regular Signing Dates.  Student-athletes have 14 calendar days to sign and return the Letter of Intent and/or Scholarship.  In some cases, a coach may re-issue the same Letter of Intent and/or Scholarship.  Usually, a coach will move on to the next student-athlete on their list.
